Lesley Krane The photographs from the horizons series are made using a plastic camera, the "Holga." I print each image onto two pages that are hand sewn with a simple running stitch. The more recent standard series is also comprised of photographs made with the Holga, but the much smaller pictorial space is not fractured. Working together as non-linear narratives, these obscure and sometimes out-of-focus photographs attempt to evoke the ever slippery and subjective nature of memory. Abstracted architectural elements make up much of the series, while the long-absent figure begins to reappear, whether in the form of a dog, a child, or the artist's reflection. The close and sometimes obscure scrutiny of these interior and exterior spaces implicates a distinct lively presence. Public and private spaces, both interior and exterior views, sometimes contain the residue of human activity: an illuminated porch light or rumpled linen on a hotel bed. The square format imbues these seemingly ordinary settings with a mysterious significance, hopefully elevating the objects pictured for more reverential contemplation. They present opportunities for us to engage our imagination as we place life's responsibilities on hold.
