The photographs from the horizons series are made using a plastic camera, the "Holga." I print each image onto two pages that are hand sewn with a simple running stitch. The more recent standard series is also comprised of photographs made with the Holga, but the much smaller pictorial space is not fractured. Working together as non-linear narratives, these obscure and sometimes out-of-focus photographs attempt to evoke the ever slippery and subjective nature of memory.
Abstracted architectural elements make up much of the series, while the long-absent figure begins to reappear, whether in the form of a dog, a child, or the artist's reflection. The close and sometimes obscure scrutiny of these interior and exterior spaces implicates a distinct lively presence. Public and private spaces, both interior and exterior views, sometimes contain the residue of human activity: an illuminated porch light or rumpled linen on a hotel bed. The square format imbues these seemingly ordinary settings with a mysterious significance, hopefully elevating the objects pictured for more reverential contemplation.

These photographs are more than merely representational images of place, time and culture. They present opportunities for us to engage our imagination as we place life's responsibilities on hold.
