Fred Cooper: "Firescapes"
Macro photos of
fire are the source for this series of
paintings, "Firescapes." While
technically photo-realism, I'm
not dedicated to the photograph, but rather deviate
frequently in both color and form for dramatic impact. Of
course all art is 'expressionism,' and though I employ the
rather painstaking process of airbrushing, my work is very
expressive and energized. Fire, like all the elements is
always moving and changing, an endless source of design. I see the life
force as scorching into the picture plane, where I capture
the moment, and then a moment later it streaks off,
continuing its journey. In these paintings I strive to avoid
recognizable images. As soon as an object becomes
identifiable it loses its power to evolve, and involve the
observer in the imaginative process. No two people see the
same thing in these works. Hopefully, each individual brings
their own sensibilities to the pieces and walk away with
different impressions. "Is what you're looking at microscopic or astronomic? I there any difference, and what does it matter? Are you looking at the paintings or are they looking at you?" |
