Neil Reichline: "Photography"
I've had an interesting and eclectic career with a
motion picture camera shooting everything from artist Ed
Ruscha's two films, to the Academy Award winning
documentary "Number Our Days." I've shot films in the
Bolivian Andes and the mountains of Ararat. I've done
commercials on the streets on Rome, New York, Mexico
City, Chicago, Los Angeles and more. The list of places
I've been as a Director of Photography are too numerous
to list. From my documentary work I learned to shoot
fast and pay attention. Things that happen in real time
usually just happen once. From my work as a commercial
cinematographer I learned the beauty of light and the
skills it takes to do things in an artful manner.
I shoot a still camera now, not to sell a product,
or document an event or place, but to create a
stand-alone piece of art, an image of beauty that
inspires, elucidates and informs. One of my favorite
places to do that is in big cities. What places! When I
worked as a cinematographer they simply served as
locations, settings or backdrops. Now I see the cities
themselves come alive, the light, the shapes, the
reflections. I look with amazement and new appreciation
at all the things man has created for himself in the
city and I try to capture those things. I try to shoot
fast. I try to capture the light and beauty of it all. I
try to see in an artful way.
