This section of wiki covers rendering tips and issues that some rendering engines have with the Songbird ReMix Bird Models.

Contents

ISSUE: The blocky artifacts on wing and tail feathers...

These artifacts are cause by rendering systems that use raytracing. The Songbird ReMix feather are very, very thin polygon rectangles. The combination of raytracing and the bending of the feathers often cause blocky artifacts to appear on the feathers.

SOLUTION: When in doubt, subdivide...

Subdivision solves 95% of all the issues with the blocky artifacts.

  • DAZ Studio and Iray/Reality rendering... The easiest way to resolve the blocky artifacts is to select the model in the "SCENE" Tab and click on the properties box (near the top of tab just outside it). Click "Edit", then "Geometry" and then "Convert to SubD...". Next, go into the "PARAMETERS" tab of the BODY (Root) section of the model and select "Mesh Resolution". "Resolution Level" should be set to "High Resolution" and "Render SubD Level (Minimum)" should be set to "1" (or higher).
  • Vue and other higher-end renders... Follow the instruction above in the "DAZ Studio and Iray rendering". Then EXPORT the model from DAZ Studio to your required format. For Vue, DAE(Collada) works pretty well with OBJ is probably the next best choice. FBX can be problematic with some parts not exporting correctly. All exports will require some to significant material tweaking.
  • Poser and Raytrace/Reality rendering... Poser 10/2014 does have subdivision capabilities although they don't work properly with the Songbird ReMix model. (Note: The next upcoming version of Poser reportedly fixes this issue). There is a workaround, though not 100% optimal. Select the model, then go to "Figures" (on the Toolbar), Select "Skinning Method" and "Poser Unimesh". Now select each wing and in the "Properties" Tab, check the "Subdivide separately from figure" and set the "Render" slider to "1" (or above).

ISSUE: Square Shadows in Poser

Small birds may render with a SQUARE shadow. This is a bug in Poser. Poser can’t figure out how to render a shadow for something really small, so it creates a square shadow as a default.

SOLUTION: Give Poser what it wants, but hide it from the camera

The solution is to put a larger item that casts a normal Poser shadow in the scene (even if it is off camera) and the square shadows will be fixed
